The Basics of S and S-PLUS
Springer-Verlag, New York
2nd Edition, 2000
ISBN 0-387-98961-7

From the Preface
Since the release of the first edition 2 years ago, S and S-PLUS have undergone major changes. The S Language, upon which S-PLUS is based, has been completely redesigned and rewritten, new functionality has been added, sometimes replacing the old. This is reflected by changes to the book in the appropriate places and a new chapter on object-oriented programming.

S-PLUS for Windows has experienced the most visible changes by means of a new and extended graphical user interface (GUI), and a split into the standard version (GUI-only use without command line) and the professional version. The extended possibilities of the GUI are described in a greatly expanded chapter on the interface.

The Trellis approach to graphics, which involves conditioning on factors of interest, has become the de facto standard in S-PLUS. This can be seen by a smaller chapter on standard graphics and a new chapter on Trellis graphics.
